The HLKPM-PM01 module is a circuit by itself. Inside the thick black box there are circuits to convert your AC mains directly to 5V DC. So using it is pretty simple. You just have to connect the AC mains terminals to the AC pin and we will get a 5V regulated voltage at its output terminals.
The module also has built-in short circuit protection and over current protection. But, still you might consider adding some external protection circuits based on your Power regulation and application. Commonly a fuse and a MOV is used on the input side to protect the module from voltage and current spikes.
